Well.. at first glance, this seems very straightforward ! ..
RULE
*** New Zealand and Australian vehicles (caravan, van, poptop.. and more) are fitted with a track which takes an 8mm rope
*** European and UK vehicles (caravan etc) are fitted with a track which takes a 6mm rope.
So are there exceptions to the rule above?
Yes, there are, as both sizes of these tracks can be **purchased in New Zealand, if a track has been damaged (this is rare) it may not be replaced by the original track size.
Additionally; vans, buses, home-made caravans, other vehicles.. need to have a track added.. so which size was added?
And.. sometimes the existing track itself can be damaged so the internal diameter of the channel will not let a rope slide past.
What do we need to do to then?
1/ Check along your track to make sure it’s not damaged, bent, compressed in place(s)
IMPORTANT
2/ Understand that it’s not so simple as 8mm or 6mm rope; these are reference terms and are NOT the actual diameter of the awning attachment method.
Term: 8mm Rope
This is comprised of an 8mm diameter rope wrapped by canvas so that 8mm diameter ends up being ~10mm diameter.. and the track it needs has an internal diameter of ~10.5mm, as can be seen on the LEFT in the picture below (the rope on the right is a 6mm diameter rope unwrapped):

Term: 6mm Rope
Just the same as the 8mm rope description right above the photo, 6mm diameter rope wrapped ends up as ~8mm in diameter and requires a track with an internal diameter of ~8.5mm.
Contrary to to the understandable supposition that 6 or 8mm rope sizes are that exact diameter, they are only identifying terms.
Taking a known diameter rope size and allowing for the canvas wrap extra, by wrapping it in a similar thickness material and then sliding it into your track should then confirm which size track you have ! (don’t just go by the track entrance, these are often spread a bit, go further along the slot).
**Buying Track
Ullrich Aluminium sell these tracks in New Zealand and have branches spread through the country (see below – as at 6th Dec 2023)
Ullrich have now been bought by Vulcan from Australia who sell these tracks in Australia also
https://vulcan.co/product/aluminium/
New Zealand’s Vulcan Extrusion Catalogue can be seen HERE (as of 9th Dec 2023)
(An extra advantage of buying tracks from Vulcan is that they usually stock them in 4m lengths as well as 2m, so no pesky join fitting your 4m Intenze Walk Through Awning / 4m Intenze Universal Awning)
